How to Identify Professional Doulas

Writer's picture: Anne Wallen, Director of MWIAnne Wallen, Director of MWI

Over the years, we’ve worked with and heard stories about the good, the bad, and the worst. Nurses, Midwives and OBs can share stories with you about the most supportive and the downright dangerous doula-supported births they’ve attended. With time in the birthing industry, you too, will have your own stories and “legends” of doulas.

Below, please find a small list of comparisons that could help you, your students, or clients to choose the right doula for them. And if you’re working as a doula yourself, this list will help you to ensure that you meet the criteria for greatness! Take a look at what makes an effective doula and learn the red flags to avoid an unhelpful support person.
